605-334-2471When you’ve got it made, sometimes the easiest thing to do is to kick back and look out for No. 1. But here’s the thing—looking out for the people in our community who need it most is sort of a big part of what it means to be Levo Credit Union. So—we’ll take giving back and impactful community service over not pitching in any day! Here’s how Levo does it. While many types of banking institutions might put bottom line above community, that’s not really how we roll at Levo. That’s why we have volunteerism as one of our core pillars as an organization. We not only give back to community programs as a financial institution, but we also encourage our team members to do the same in their free time—and during work hours!
How do we do it? Well, we provide every Levo team member with V-T-O. That’s volunteer time off. This means that the employees of Levo Credit Union are allotted a certain number of hours of time off every year that can be used toward volunteering with whatever missions they’re passionate about—from local nonprofits to their neighborhood church to national organizations! Along with this opportunity for all of our team members to show they care in their own way, Levo also offers up chances to give back as a team throughout the year. Our organization volunteers with Junior Achievement and youth mentoring programs, and we’ve also taken the time to serve with community nonprofits such as the Good Samaritan Society, the Banquet, Lunch is Served and the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.
It’s part of a larger mission we have as a credit union to encourage financial education and to support youth and families in the communities we serve. That was made formal and official in 2021, when we introduced the Levo Cares Foundation, an effort to take the community service we’ve been doing for years and create an even greater impact that amplifies our efforts. The vision? To help people live better. Levo Cares has already started to live out that vision in the time since it was founded—from providing community scholarships to area students, to supporting the Night of Hope and Caring that raises funds to help level the playing field for classrooms across our community, to high-impact efforts for area youth, such as Feeding South Dakota’s Backpack Program and Adopt a Classroom.
But this effort goes beyond our own team members. The members of our credit union are also encouraged to chip in! One way we make this easy (and delicious) is with our Perky Blend coffee, a roast we developed in partnership with Dunn Bros. and whose proceeds are given 100% to local charities. So if you’re a big coffee drinker like me, it’s pretty satisfying that every time I head into a Levo branch to get a fresh bag, it’s benefiting someone in need—and not just anyone, but my own friends and neighbors!
Being a supportive part of the community isn’t always the easiest choice. Sometimes it can take time, effort, energy and occasionally getting your hands dirty. But there’s no better feeling than knowing you made a difference—and at Levo, it sort of comes with the territory.
